Chump of the Week: Mitt Romney

Chump of the Week: Mitt Romney

| Heather H. | 2

Mitt Romney is already a Featured Chump. But considering the sheer amount of ridiculous that occurred since Rick Santorum was crowned Chump of the Week last Friday – between the New Hampshire primary and his comments in South Carolina – Romney’s earned our Chump of the Week (COW) status.

First, let’s revisit one of the more telling moments of the past week, which occurred during the first of the doubleheader GOP debates in New Hampshire. When asked if states have the right to ban contraception (which fellow candidate Rick Santorum thinks is just fine), Romney replied:

“George, I – I don’t know whether a state has a right to ban contraception. No state wants to. I mean, the idea of you putting forward things that states might want to do that no – no state wants to do and asking me whether they could do it or not is kind of a silly thing, I think.”

Whether or not states could ban birth control is not a “silly” thing. It’s an issue that would affect millions of Americans. As others have identified, Romney’s feigned surprise at why he was being asked the question was in and of itself a tell – he didn’t want to answer it, because affirming that he doesn’t think birth control should be banned would anger the conservatives and answering as Rick Santorum did is way out of the mainstream and not a good position for him with most voters.

After heading to highly conservative South Carolina, Romney tripped over himself to add pro-life language to his stump speech in an effort to counter at least two ads questioning his pro-life credentials.

Mitt inserted the phrase “protection of life” into the last line of his speech, and used every opportunity to reassert his anti-choice rhetoric. At one point, he repeated the word “life” twice in a row when speaking about the Declaration of Independence. “Government hadn’t endowed us with those rights, the creator did and among them were life — life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” As Romney continues to try and persuade skeptical socially conservative voters where he stands, to us, it’s yet another indicator that he can’t be trusted. We’re kind of bummed that the race to the bottom on women’s health issues has come to this.

Of course, the biggest Chump revelation has to be what surfaced via a new book called The Real Romney. When a 23-year-old, divorced, single mother, who lived in his ward, discovered she was once again pregnant, Romney attempted to persuade her—despite the fact that she wanted to keep the child—to give up it up for adoption because she was unmarried. Unfortunately, his record of interfering with women’s health doesn’t end there. In another case, when a mother was in the hospital and was advised to have an abortion because she was diagnosed with dangerous blood clots, Romney went to the hospital to dissuade her stating: “Well, why do you get off easy when other women have their babies?”

Three chump-like stories in a week add up – there couldn’t be anyone more fitting or more deserving of the Chump of the Week crown than Mitt Romney. He clearly is no friend to women when it comes to their rights to make decisions regarding their own health. He’s proven time and time again, he can’t be trusted.

His facial expression and actions are beginning to rival that of the dangerous kook, Rick Sanitarium who should also be in one.
