Guest Post from Wisconsin: Scott Walker is Out of Touch on Women's Health

Yesterday was the primary election in Wisconsin’s historic recall election. And all the progressive, pro-choice candidates who will bring much needed change in Wisconsin are confirmed. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) is proud to endorse Mayor Tom Barrett for Governor in the recall election on June 5.

Tom Barrett has been a true champion for women’s health and rights. As Mayor and Congressman, Tom Barrett has been a steadfast supporter of access to reproductive health care and trusts women to make their own health care decisions.

To kick off our support of Tom Barrett, PPAWI has launched a new online ad to expose Governor Scott Walker’s misplaced priorities and cuts to women’s health. The ad features women in Wisconsin who have relied on lifesaving and essential health care services provided by Planned Parenthood that have been targeted by Governor Walker’s political agenda.

Since taking office in January 2011, we have seen 17 months of attacks on Wisconsin women and families. Despite rising poverty rates, Governor Walker and Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature have eliminated all state funding for Planned Parenthood health centers in Wisconsin. Governor Walker and the Republican senators being recalled also cut funding for colposcopy services for advanced cervical cancer screening, repealed comprehensive sex education standards, removed pay equity protections for women, banned private insurance coverage for abortion, and passed new abortion restrictions over the strong objections of Wisconsin doctors. All of these efforts needlessly put women’s health and lives at risk and will cost Wisconsin taxpayers millions of dollars. It’s no wonder Scott Walker debuted today on Women are Watching as a newly minted Chump.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin serves almost 80,000 patients each year, most of whom are at or below the federal poverty limit. Those patients cannot afford three more years of Governor Walker and Republican-led attacks on women’s health and rights. These extreme policies and the people that support them must be recalled and replaced. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin urges our thousands of statewide supporters to go to the polls June 5 to vote for Tom Barrett.
