Huckabee "Abortion Forum" Roundup: GOPers Compete for Title of Most Extreme (or Clueless)

As we mentioned yesterday, GOP presidential candidates got together last night for a little soiree ─ you know, have some cocktails, watch a movie,…and talk about how much they’d all like to take away your reproductive rights.
That's right ─ Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, and Newt Gingrich gathered at Mike Huckabee’s “Abortion Forum” to share a ton of misinformation with each other and the audience about women’s health care. And boy, was it interesting. Let’s review some of the highlights and just how off base and extreme each candidate is on these issues.
Michele Bachmann:
“This is the seminal issue of our time.”
What she’s really saying:
The economy? Pssh. Your uterus is the seminal issue of our time.
Rick Perry:
“I will end taxpayer money funded abortions. Period.”
What he’s really saying:
I will do absolutely nothing as president, because the Hyde Amendment currently prohibits federal taxpayer funding for abortion. Period.
Rick Santorum:
“[I] authored every major pro-life legislation that ever passed the United States Senate over the past 20 years.”
What he’s really saying:
I worked real hard to pass lots of anti-choice legislation in the United States Senate!
(Nuff said.)
Newt Gingrich:
“We can pass a bill defining ‘personhood’ as beginning at conception, and you don’t need a constitutional amendment, it is written in the 14th Amendment ─ it would be an act of Congress, and you can put in the same legislation blocking the courts from reviewing it.”
What he’s really saying:
If voted into office, I will pass a bill that could permanently ban birth control, in vitro fertilization, and potential cancer treatments.
So who wins the award for the Most Extreme Yet Also Clueless candidate of the night? (Drum roll)…Newt Gingrich! No contest. In addition to his pledge to define “personhood” as protected by the 14th amendment (which, again, could permanently ban birth control), he also contended once again that he would redirect Planned Parenthood’s funding to adoption organizations, which is just senseless. Would these other organizations also provide cancer screenings, Pap tests, and other preventive health services? Methinks not. All Newt is doing is reiterating his blatant lack of information on the issue. Let's repeat: defunding Planned Parenthood would not mean defunding abortion care. What it would do is literally take away preventive health care from millions of Americans.
And even though Mitt Romney was not in attendance, he might as well have been, since he is just as extreme on women’s health as his fellow GOP presidential candidates.
Sheesh. The whole Trying to Pass Extreme Misinformation as a Presidential Sell thing is just not a good look, guys. Chumps indeed.
