Iowa Caucus Wrap-Up: "Winners" and Losers

Last night, the Iowa Caucuses demonstrated how the GOP nomination fight has become a competition to see which candidates could go furthest to the right on women’s health. The winners? Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul. The losers? Women across America.
All three are on record supporting “personhood” initiatives that would ban common forms of birth control, vowing to appoint Supreme Court justices that would overturn Roe v. Wade, and pledging to defund Title X — thereby denying family planning assistance to low- and moderate-income individuals. Let’s not forget all these positions are far to the right of public opinion.
As the nomination fight continues to move on to New Hampshire and South Carolina, one thing is clear: no matter who the Republicans nominate, we’ll be faced with someone who thinks he will win on an anti-women’s health platform.
Rick Santorum’s statement on Monday saying that he thought states have the right to outlaw birth control (odd since he kept talking about “freedom” in his speech last night) was just a corollary to Mitt Romney’s support of “personhood” in October.
Regardless of who ends up as the nominee, they can’t run away from their records or their statements on women’s health because we won’t let them.
Tell them you’re watching and sign our pledge today!
