Quote of the Day: Rick Perry's "Hearts of Men"

| Heather H.

Rick Perry sure has a way with words. Here's our favorite quote from his appearance at last night's "abortion forum" (yes, that's a real thing), hosted by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

"The greatest victories in the battle for life are not going to be won in the halls of government. It’s going to be won in the hearts of men."

Really, Rick? You're being serious? You just left out more than half of the population that's actually impacted by your agenda..

Actually, MAN legally does NOT mean woman, which is why we were legally denied rights for so long.
I don't think it is over analysis at all. I certainly don't go to Men's Health forums for general health information. I don't tell people I am a man.

Rick Perry is certainly my last choice for president and his efforts to assault the rights of women are unacceptable. However, this post seems to be an overanalysis of language. In the traditional sense, "men" and "man" are used to describe the whole human race--however sexist that etymology is.

With this quote, I don't think we should be focusing on the fact that Perry said "men" instead of "people," "men and women," or whatever else. That's far too surface-level. Instead, we should focus on the fact that he villainizes people who have abortions and who are okay with the legality of abortions by saying that he will somehow "win over" our hearts (i.e. our morality, our values) in the future because abortion--to him--is so obviously immoral.

Interestingly enough, the "halls of government" are the only places where a "victory for life" can potentially be won. One in three American women will have an abortion in her lifetime. But, since men can vote on this issue too, it's possible that pro-choice America could be outdone and anti-choice laws could be put into place--making this a victory in the government for the pro-lifers but not a victory in the hearts of so many men and women who think abortion should be safe and legal.

To reiterate: I hate Rick Perry....and the majority of the Republican candidates. It's disturbing that these people are being considered for the highest office in our country.

"People" was too many syllables for him to handle, apparently...
