Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison Stands up for Texas Women and Planned Parenthood

| Jacqueline M.

This morning on MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd, United States Senator from Texas Kay Bailey Hutchison criticized Governor Rick Perry’s decision to sabotage the Medicaid Women’s Health Program for more than 130,000 low-income women, and voiced support for the critical role Planned Parenthood plays in providing preventive care.

Watch the clip and check out her statement below:

HUTCHISON: We cannot afford to lose the Medicaid funding for low income women to have health care services. We cannot. We keep turning back federal funds that every state gets and then try to find money in our budget, which is already being cut in key areas like education. I do think that the governor needs to sit down with the federal government and work it out so we can have our share — our fair share not more — of money for Medicaid to help low-income women have their health care services.

Now compare that to Governor Perry and his cavalier comments from last week where he once again shows that he would rather throw health care for an additional 130,000 women overboard than allow Planned Parenthood to provide essential health care like breast and cervical cancer screenings, birth control, and STD prevention through public health programs.

Watch him as he stumbles through while trying to defend his decision:

Perry: We don¹t want Planned Parenthood and their affiliates who are in the abortion business engaged in this process. This is pretty straight up.

Reporter:
But under federal law the money is not allowed to go to abortions under this progam at all.

Perry:
W-well, we would rather be very sure of it.

There are too many "what ifs" and "what now's" concerning this very important issue. I'm sorry it scares me to think that someone Rick Perry, who seems to not know what is going on, is running things.

Look, for those of us women who live in Texas...the fact that she came out as a Republican and said that Rick Perry made the wrong choice and we need to keep Planned Parenthood open is HUGE. After yesterday's disastrous attempt by the Republican party to have a women clean up their mess by sticking Cathy Mcadams Rodgers on Chris Matthews, it was at least SOMETHING to see KBH come out today and say something with a hint of reason to it. This is the first instance of this here and so while I'm not a big KBH supporter for many reasons, I will openly support the fact that she came out and said to keep Planned Parenthood open and acknowledged that it provides necessary health services for women. Really people, here in Tejas that is HUGE. And it's something to start with.

What exactly did she say? She said Texas needs money for preventative health care for low income women. AND she completely skirted the issue of birth control and abortion being considered health care. Religious freedom allows individuals personal choice.

But wait, don't corporations now have the same rights as individuals in America? So your boss's choices matter. More than yours, apparently.

I am Texas born, this is a complete embarrassment. The people of Texas are not ignorant louts, but their elected officials certainly are. Wake up, Texas. This woman is not your friend.

Blatant hypocrisy here ... this woman supported the Blunt Amendment .... you are giving her WAY too much credit.
