The Truth on What Rick Santorum Has Been Busy Saying...1,014 Times
Rick Santorum took the gloves off this weekend, coming out to say how it's sooo silly for us ladies to think that he would actually ban birth control:
"It's been clarified about oh, 150,000 times, so I'll clarify 150,001," Santorum said. "I've never said I wanted to ban birth control. I wouldn't vote for it. This is sort of the sad part that comes in, with folks who have an agenda aren't really interested in the truth."
Which is funny considering a) his support of "personhood" amendments could involve exactly that, and b) if he wants to speak "truth" about what he keeps repeating, what about this alarming tidbit of information?
When Santorum was a senator between 1996 and 2007, he was so preoccupied with attacking women's health care that he mentioned certain reproductive health terms (like womb, fetal, and fetus) more than any other senator ─ including uttering the word abortion a whopping 1,014 times. And although he was just one of 100 senators, these 1,014 mentions account for 12 percent of all senate utterances of the word during that time. Twelve percent!
Check out Sunlight Foundation's chart to find all of the other terms Santorum had an, ahem, interest in during his time as senator. (Andrea Stone at the Huffington Post also has a handy slideshow.)
So despite his contention that there's some "agenda" out to get him, this confirms a pretty terrifying (and let's face it, kinda creepy) reality that targeting women's health is exactly where his priorities will lie if elected to the White House ─ and a reminder as to why Santorum deserves his Chump of the Week and Featured Chump card.
