What We're Reading - September 12

| Jacqueline M.

Good morning, everyone! It’s finally starting to feel like Fall outside as the temperatures begin to cool. But that doesn’t mean things aren’t heating up with the presidential election underway and many state legislatures back in session. Here’s what we’re reading this morning…

Obama campaign is out with a new ad, targeting Romney on social issues.“New Obama campaign ad calls Romney ‘dangerous’ for women’s health”—“The Obama campaign is keeping pressure on Mitt Romney over women’s health issues in a new campaign ad. ‘Mitt Romney's position on women's health, it's dangerous,’ a woman says in the ad. The narrator then says Romney and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) would eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood, ‘allow employers to deny coverage for cancer screenings and birth control,’ and says both have backed legislation that would outlaw abortions in cases of rape and incest. ‘We can't afford to let him take away our choices, to take away basic healthcare,’ the woman in the ad continues. ‘I don’t think that women’s health issues have faced a crises [sic] like this in decades.’…”

Good news out of Colorado: Personhood Amendment fails. “Colorado anti-abortion initiative misses ballot deadline for 2012 election”—“The Office of Colorado Secretary of State said Tuesday the proposed anti-abortion Personhood Amendment will not be on the 2012 ballot — no matter what the outcome of proponents' planned legal action to prove they collected enough voter signatures. The ballot certification deadline was Monday. Even if a judge rules Personhood sponsors' petition was sufficient, the measure would have to wait for the 2014 general election, Secretary of State's spokesman Andrew Cole told the Post Tuesday. Personhood USA founder Keith Mason said Tuesday supporters have until Sept. 28 to file a lawsuit challenging Secretary of State Scott Gessler's determination on Aug. 29 that the Personhood Amendment failed to make the ballot — falling short by 3,859 signatures. Petitioners collected only 82,246 valid signatures of the 86,105 required, according to state officials.”

Today is the first day of a constitutionally mandated veto session, and women are calling on lawmakers to sustain the veto of a bad bill. “Gov. Nixon Optimistic Ahead of Wednesday's Veto Override Session”—“JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missouri lawmakers head back to work Wednesday, and two vetoes top the list of things to do. Republican lawmakers feel confident the override session will overturn Governor Nixon's veto of Senate Bill 749, also known as the Conscience bill. That bill would allow workers or institutions to avoid providing services that go against their religious beliefs, including abortion and birth control.”
