What We're Reading This Morning -- February 6
Good morning and happy Monday! I hope you enjoyed the weekend. I spent mine watching the Boston Bruins beat the Washington Capitals in an excellent hockey match. Oh and of course there was some other sporting event that everyone was watching, but I think I blocked out what happened there. Just kidding…last night, the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 21-17 to win the Super Bowl. While it was a disappointing loss for my team, it was an exciting season and the final game came down to the wire! As I attempt to move on from this defeat, here are some morning reads to distract everyone…
Rick Santorum is not a doctor, but that doesn’t stop him from weighing in on the “connections” between breast cancer and abortion care. “Rick Santorum Opines On Susan G. Komen Foundation's Planned Parenthood Decision” – "‘I don't believe breast cancer research is advanced by funding an organization that does abortions where you've seen ties to cancer and abortions,’ said a hoarse Santorum on ‘Fox News Sunday.’ In fact, a 2007 study published by the Archives of Internal Medicine studying 105,716 women found no link between breast cancer and abortions.”
Whither, Karen Handel? People are asking what we think of this HuffPo story from yesterday documenting Komen VP Karen Handel’s involvement in the initial decision by the Komen Foundation to change their grant criteria in a way that would exclude us. Here’s what we think: Breast cancer is too important to get mired in politics. We look forward to working with Komen or any other organization who shares this mission. The Huffington Post Reports: “Karen Handel, Susan G. Komen's Anti-Abortion VP, Drove Decision To Defund Planned Parenthood” – “Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the nation's leading anti-breast-cancer charity, has insisted that its since-reversed decision to pull funding from Planned Parenthood arose from a routine change in criteria for grant eligibility that had nothing to do with abortion politics. But a Komen insider told HuffPost on Sunday that Karen Handel, Komen's staunchly anti-abortion vice president for public policy, was the main force behind the decision to defund Planned Parenthood and the attempt to make that decision look nonpolitical.”
In a non-surprise, non-twist, Newt Gingrich objects to the protection of birth control access for women: “Gingrich Blasts Obama's Birth Control Policy as 'Outrageous Assault' on Religion” – “Gingrich's comments come after a week of outrage from the Catholic Church and his fellow GOP presidential candidates over the policy, which mandates that religious hospitals, charities and schools include co-pay-free birth control in their health care plans. ‘This is a tremendous infringement of religious liberty,’ Newt Gingrich said on NBC's ‘Meet the Press.’ ‘Every time you turn around the secular government is shrinking the rights of religious institutions in America.’”
