About Newt Gingrich (GA)
Although many Americans may recognize the name Newt Gingrich, not enough people know the truth about his record — especially his record on women’s health.
So let’s be clear: Newt Gingrich is all chump and out of touch.
During more than three decades in the public eye, Newt Gingrich’s career has been marred by ethical controversy and defined by an ideology outside the mainstream. For those paying attention, Newt Gingrich is known as a party fanatic and serial flip-flopper.
It’s a record that paints a frightening picture of Gingrich and his approach toward women’s health. In fact, Gingrich cast 74 votes on reproductive rights during his 20 years in Congress, 72 of which were anti-women’s health.
During a recent Republican presidential debate, Gingrich reaffirmed his out of touch voting record and joined the chorus against women’s rights, coming out in support of “personhood” and encouraging Congress to use its authority to “define life and therefore undo all Roe v. Wade for the entire country in one legislative action.”
Repealing Roe v. Wade is popular among that crowd – the GOP presidential hopefuls, that is.
Newt Gingrich has voted to eliminate funding for the national family planning program, which provides preventive health care to millions of low-income women, and has repeatedly attacked Planned Parenthood and pushed to bar Planned Parenthood health centers from providing care.
This would mean an end to lifesaving cancer screenings, contraception, and other preventive services for women across the country.
At the behest of a special interest group, Gingrich signed the Susan B. Anthony List's anti-women’s health pledge promising to advance anti-choice legislation, and defund Planned Parenthood. He also pledged to nominate strict constructionist judges to the federal bench, and to select only anti-choice appointees for relevant Cabinet and Executive Branch positions. He supports banning abortions and prosecuting doctors who perform them, voted to refuse military women the right to an abortion in military hospitals, and voted in favor of the Federal Abortion Ban.
Additionally, he routinely attacks health care reform, a law that ends discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions and extends coverage to millions of Americans, including preventive care for women.
Newt Gingrich’s recent political ascent may be new, but his record against women isn’t. He needs to know that even though primary voters just started paying attention, we’ve been watching for years.
