Planned Parenthood is one of the nation’s leading women’s health care advocates and providers, and a trusted source of primary and preventive care for women, men, and teens in communities across the United States.
Unfortunately, politicians at the federal and state level continue to attack Planned Parenthood and threaten Planned Parenthood health centers’ ability to provide health care to patients who need it the most. These attacks are far out-of-the-mainstream, and opposed by a majority of Americans.
The facts are:
- One in five American women has turned to Planned Parenthood at some time in her life for professional, non-judgmental, and confidential care. Three million women, men, and teens are served in Planned Parenthood health centers nationwide every year.
-
More than 90 percent of the health care Planned Parenthood health centers provide is preventive.
-
Last year, Planned Parenthood health centers provided nearly one million Pap smears, nearly 2.5 million patients’ birth control, 830,000 breast exams, prenatal care, and nearly four million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections (including HIV).
- Planned Parenthood health centers’ federal funding helps cover the costs of basic and preventive health care, including cancer screenings, birth control, family planning visits, annual exams, testing for HIV and other STIs, and other basic care.
- Seventy-three percent of Planned Parenthood health centers are in rural or medically underserved areas. Planned Parenthood health centers provide primary and preventive health care to many who would otherwise have nowhere to turn. According to the Guttmacher Institute, six in 10 patients who receive care at a family planning health center like Planned Parenthood consider it their main source of health care.
- Planned Parenthood works every day to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and keep women healthy.
- Nearly 1.2 million teens and adults receive medically accurate sex education from Planned Parenthood affiliates each year.
- Planned Parenthood websites receive more than 30 million visits from around the world every year for services, information, and opportunities for involvement.
- Investing in preventive care saves taxpayers money.
Too many elected officials or candidates have made it a priority to prevent Planned Parenthood from providing health care to women.
Watch what your elected officials are saying and see where they stand on the important issue of supporting Planned Parenthood.
